The workshop "Birds & Beyond: Exploring Indian Birds and Natural History with Sarmaya x BNHS" aims to explore the fascinating world of Indian birds and their representation in natural history through two key elements: taxidermy specimens from BNHS (Bombay Natural History Society) and rare books from Sarmaya's collection (A Century of Birds from the Himalaya Mountains by John Gould). The purpose of the workshop is to provide participants with an opportunity to delve into the intricate processes of taxidermy and the historical documentation of birds in rare and antique books. By showcasing taxidermy birds, the workshop highlights the preservation of species for scientific and educational purposes, while also discussing the ethical considerations involved. Ultimately, the event will inspire participants to connect with the rich natural history of India, spark conversations on conservation, and promote an understanding of the cultural and scientific significance of bird species through a unique lens. The species are more than 100 years old and each of these species is unique and some even endangered today.
This will be followed by a walkthrough of Sarmaya's exhibition 'In the Dappled Light' which will be on view until 4th May.
