Saturday, 24th June 11 am to 1 pm Join AWM on a visit to Chemould CoLab, an exciting young artist residency & exhibition space in the heart of Colaba. We will meet and explore new in-process works by current artists-in-residence, Jayeeta Chatterjee & Kuldeep Singh! Through her practice, Jayeeta Chatterjee highlights the issues within the domestic and monotonous lives of middle class women, particularly from lower income groups living in small towns. Trained as a printmaker, first she prepares large woodblock and prints the composition on old saris which she has collected from women she represents in her work. Through traditional quilting and embroidery, she weaves mythological tales, floral motifs and the day-to-day stories of homemakers. Jayeeta (b.1995) completed her MFA in Printmaking from Faculty of Fine Arts, Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda . Kuldeep Singh’s practice is informed by his rigourous decade-long training in Odissi, combining the former's rich methodology of storytelling, gesture and myriad movement history and literature, along with an in-depth understanding of the human body. Working through interdisciplinary means, Kuldeep creates hybrid systems of fragmented storytelling in multimedia setups – by working through short films and sound, painting, mud sculptures, and immersive performance in installation based environments. His interests range from queer subjectivity and identity representation layered through a South Asian perspective; to food and ecofeminism informed through a decolonial thought. Since mid 2019, Kuldeep has been re-interpreting the historic raagmala paintings of Central India (16th - 18th century CE) through a queer/ecological lens, which integrate the emic approach to the study of South Asian music and visual arts. Chemould CoLab, an extension programme of Chemould Prescott Road, discovers and supports the most exciting emerging artists at the start of their careers.
