Nestled at an altitude of 3590 metres above sea level, Sheeshnag Lake is an oligotrophic lake (water body that has a low content of algal production and thus has clear water of high-drinking quality) that is home to several species of fish including the brown trout. The lake appears greenish in colour because of its lush green meadows that surround it, making it a breathtaking beauty to admire.
The hike to Sheeshnag is a long and arduous one but it's totally worth the effort. The trail starts from Chandanwari, about 15 kms away from Pahalgam and is also the point where the famous Amarnath Yatra Starts. The initial 2 kms of hike is a steep climb up to Pissu Top and then the trail gradually gains altitude for about 8 kms and the final stretch is a steep 1 km climb. Lunch is provided at a point 3 kms before Sheeshnag lake.
