There's something about winters in Dehli, and what better time to make the most of it than during the week of Christmas, a fuzzy cauldron of festivity unlike any other. We at The Cities of Dehli wanted to use the Yuletide spirit to expand on our usual offerings and take you on a whirlwind journey through the many faiths that have called Dehli home over the past nine centuries and beyond. Acting as our guide and muse will be none other than the avenue of Chandini Chowk. Still Shahjahanabad's centrepiece, it bustles with places of worship just as much as it does with trade and commerce.

Details

  • As we walk down this primary spine of a once-imperial city, the Digambar Jain Lal Mandir offers the first, imposing visual milestone and many a tantalising clue; the colonial-era Central Baptist Church is surely gearing towards the celebrations of the 25th, while Gurudwara Sisganj Sahib shines as bright and defiant as ever. Equally resplendent is the Sunehri Masjid next door - literally 'golden' in name. Throughout our historical hike, Chandni Chowk itself will remain a proactive, 'living' protagonist, and so will its women - whether the remarkable Jahan Ara whose extensive patronage adorned it, or the enigmatically powerful Begum Samru whose haveli was once a unmissable attraction along its length, or the oft-ignored Fatehpuri Begum whose masjid continues to be an oasis of calm at its end. In the early waking hours of the 24th, we hope to encounter all these disparate worlds with you!
