After witnessing the unique location of Firoz Shah Tughlaq and his barely-extant Firozabad/Kotla Firoz Shah amidst the historical geography of present-day Dehli, we are eager to welcome you to his uncle's handiwork - Tughlaqabad, the 3rd 'city' of our capital.
Placed at one corner of the riverine plain between the Yamuna and the Aravallis, and almost skirting the Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary, its massive walls and bastions that overlook the Mehrauli Badarpur Road were built by Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq. Its vast interiors and remains, while admittedly dilapidated, provide invaluable teaching tools for leadership, advancements in architectural styles and technologies, and the careful manoeuvring of material and intellectual resources.
Once occupying a rocky position on the frontiers of Sultanate Dehli, this mid-14th century 'capital' still feels just as distant and elusive today. Why would a debutant dynasty move that far away from the usual hub(s) of power ? In their inspired ideas for the landscape of Tughlaqabad, were these relative strangers to North India trying to remember a lost homeland ?
These are only the tips of the iceberg when it comes to Tughlaqabad - an entire fortress-city conceptualised and inhabited within four short years. In short, an evening we'd hate for you to miss.
