The Walled City of Shahjahanabad was particularly very famous its fortifications as can be fathomed from the widely used name. But post the Revolt of 1857 as the British bombarded the Old City ruthlessly, almost all traces of the walls and gates were wiped out except at a few places, unknown and unseen.

So join me as we embark on a journey to understand the essence of the most romanticised city of Delhi.

I'll take you along the periphery of the walled city as we understand the topography of the city and the construction pattern. We'll also look at some of the remaining havelis of the affluent merchants who chose to reside in the spacious suburbs near the city walls as opposed to the congested city centre.

Moving forward, we'll also delve into how this prosperous city, which at one point of time was a centre of a quarter of the world's trade single-handedly, declined to such a great extent by observing it's major mosques, from the grandiose of Shah Jahan's Jama Masjid to it's poorer copies built during the reign of Aurangzeb and Mohammad Shah Rangila.
