Indian classical music is often called Raga Music or Raga Sangeet. What exactly is this Raga & Rasa? What is the way to learn it ? What are the ingredients to improvise it? Do rules define the raga? Does knowing the rules makes one a Raga musician? All these are the questions are a common thing in the minds of layman and the same shall be discussed in an interactive way.
The Flow:
First we would introduce sitar as the instrument, what all it can do, what is the job of each one of 20 strings, why is sitar called a complete instrument in the Indian classical format, what is the traditional way of presentation of classical music with Sitar, etc.
Moving on to Raga, a raga (pronounced RAH-guh) is a melodic framework for improvisation in Indian classical music and has a character. It is pretty difficult to word what a Raga is than it is to say what a Raga is not. The rāga is a unique and central feature of the classical Indian music tradition. Although the approach of creating music is very different, there are common points between Indian classical music and Western music. The concept of Harmony does exist in Indian music, only to be presented in different way than it is in the Western format.
The idea of Indian classical music has its roots several centuries in the past. The ideas / concepts in Indian music are many times related to nature and that is why it is termed as ‘Abhijaat Sangeet’.
We shall play 2-3 ragas having different rasas to establish how the ambience changes and the effect it has on the mood of the listener.
Post this, we will take a break & shall move on to some ambient music, which shall be played on electric sitar with some harmony and rhythm backing tracks / loops
(the melodies of which shall still be based on ragas). This would also show how ragas can be ingredients to composing music and expressing stories.
Join us to spend a evening learning something new, exchanging and debating cultural evolution that can be abstract at times, or to just sit and listen to the sounds of Sitar.
What is Rasa?
In Indian aesthetics, a rasa (Sanskrit: रस) literally means "nectar, essence or taste". It is a concept in Indian arts denoting the aesthetic flavour of any visual, literary or musical work that evokes an emotion or feeling in the reader or audience, but cannot be described. It refers to the emotional flavors/essence crafted into the work by the artist and relished by a 'sensitive spectator' or sahṛidaya, literally one who "has heart", and can connect to the work with emotion, without dryness.
Artist Background
Varun Nimbolkar is a Pune based Sitar player trained in Indian classical format for the past 15 years. He is trained directly under international sitar maestro Ustad Usman Khan of Dharwad Gharana lineage. Varun has received training for vocals in Indian Classical format for a brief period of 3 years. His style of Sitar playing is deeply influenced by a blend of both Gayaki and Tant Ang, the two pre-dominant styles of playing Sitar.
Apart from classical music, Varun is a songwriter-composer whose music is available across all digital platforms. He performs a set of his originals with his band which is a blend of genres like Blues rock, soft rock, drum n bass, folk rock with Indian melodies. His fusion is unique and has story based compositions, rather than improvised classical sitar fusion. Along with acoustic, his experiments with Electric sitar are very well received among the audiences.
Varun has been accepted at Berklee college of Music NYC for Masters in song-writing and composition and plans to attend the same in the coming fall.
