The caves of Jogeshwari, also known as the caves of Amboli, are among the earliest Shaivite caves in Mumbai. They belong to a specific subsect of Shaivism, known as the Pashupata Shaivism, where Shiva was worshipped as a 'Pashupati', i.e., Lord of the Pashus (Souls). These 1400-year-old caves are just ten minutes away from the Western Express Highway.
Today, these caves are one of the heritage sites in Mumbai that are paying the price of urban development activities and encroachment.
