Built to conform with strict planning regulations on land reclaimed as a part of the Backbay Reclamation Scheme in the early 20th century, these Art Deco style structures showcase nautical features and architectural elements that respond to the city’s tropical climate and proximity to the Sea. This tour will explore the history of the development of this cosmopolitan neighborhood, and how it emerged as a symbol of Mumbai's modern identity. We will view a curated selection of iconic Deco buildings along the Marine Drive stretch that mark a unique skyline, starting from Oceana in the South. The tour will conclude at Bharatiya Bhavan. This tour covers one of the finest and most cohesive Deco precincts in Mumbai, the stretch of 35 sea-facing Art Deco buildings along Marine Drive - also known as the Queen’s necklace. These buildings are part of the UNESCO World Heritage ‘Victorian Gothic and Art Deco Ensembles of Mumbai’ inscribed in June 2018.
