About the experience
Let's celebrate the little-known Luso-Indian tradition of Consoada with a festive platter that blends Kochi's rich culinary heritage with warmth of the Christmas season. This curated cultural event at the Cochin Heritage Carnival features traditional flavours, personal stories, and timeless traditions, preserving a unique cultural legacy while bringing the community together.
A relic of the Portuguese colonial era, 'Consoada' is a Portuguese word of Latin origin consolare which means to console or to comfort. Back in Portugal, consoada refers to the Christmas Eve dinner shared among family members but in Fort Kochi & Vypin, it is all about the tray of homemade sweets and savouries sent as gifts to friends and family. Everything is made at home during the advent lovingly prepared and shared among friends and family, keeping the Christmas spirit alive.
Each consoada is distinct and varies in Portugal, Goa, Mangalore, the Konkan Coast, and Fort Kochi. The Fort Kochi variant brings together a blend of its unique heritage from Portuguese, Dutch, English, and of course, the local influences. Each bite is a testament to generations of shared joy and festivity.
This immersive celebration honours a fading Christmas legacy and the spirit of Kochi’s cultural richness. Join us in discovering this remarkable piece of history!
