1001 and counting- An artist's numerous encounters with India's Tigers, a Sarmaya talk by Sudarshan Shaw

“…maybe, the tiger is a farmer, tilling a large earthen antelope through his teeth and claws, sowing into her the seeds of labour and valor.”

Sudarshan Shaw is an artist, visual designer and creator of an art style he calls ‘Folk Indica’. For Sarmaya Talks, Sudarshan will talk about how he came to formulate this style, which is rooted in India’s art and folk expressions, as well as our rich cultural heritage. He hopes through his art to “bring the spirit of native art back as the visual language of the land, for the land.”

In his talk titled ‘1001 and counting- An artist's numerous encounters with India's tigers’, Sudarshan will reveal facets of the elusive big cat. These are gathered from travels into deep jungles, as well as a study of ancient temple sculptures, folk fables and other native art forms. Using portraits of the tiger, the artist will demonstrate the many ways in which the fates of art and nature are intertwined in India.
