About the Lecture

We are often taught that intimacy is singular, that somewhere there is one person meant to meet our emotional needs, hold our vulnerabilities, and make us feel whole. The idea of the soulmate is so deeply woven into how we imagine love and belonging that it rarely gets questioned.

But what happens when this promise fails? What does it cost us to organise our lives around the expectation that one relationship should be enough?

In this unLecture, Utkarsha Jagga turns to loneliness, friendship, and the quiet difficulty of relying on people, especially in young adulthood. Drawing from her work on relationships, intimacy, and everyday forms of care, she asks whether loneliness is less a personal failing and more a relational condition, shaped by the stories we inherit and the communities available to us.

This lecture is held in collaboration with Bloomsbury Publishing and will weave in themes from two books on Bloomsbury’s certified reading list: ‘I Want to Die but I Want to Eat Tteokbokki’ and ‘Welcome to the Hyunam-dong Bookshop’. Together, the lecture and texts open up questions around loneliness, care, everyday survival, and the quiet forms of connection that sustain us.

About the Speaker

Utkarsha Jagga is a psychologist and the founder of The Coping Central. Her work sits at the intersection of loneliness, friendship, intimacy, and how people learn, or don’t learn to rely on one another.

She is interested in the ordinary ways people survive hard days: through food, conversation, shared silences, and showing up imperfectly. Her approach centres on everyday care, relational labour, and the quiet bonds that often go unnoticed but keep us alive.

About unLecture

unLecture brings experts out of classrooms and into cafés, bars and neighbourhood spaces across Delhi. Created by three friends from St. Stephen’s, Delhi, who wanted learning to feel warm, social and alive. unLecture turns an otherwise ordinary evening into a conversation you may think about long after it ends.
