Join us this January for a lecture that begins with big cats behaving strangely, and opens into a much larger conversation about ecology, power, and the Anthropocene.
About the Lecture
In recent years, leopards and tigers have been spotted in places they were never expected to be, urban neighbourhoods, highways, farmlands, even inside homes. Some have begun preying on humans. These animals are often described as aberrations, threats, or “man-eaters.” But what if their behaviour is not an anomaly, but a signal?
In this lecture, Nayanika Mathur introduces us to the idea of “crooked cats”, big cats whose unexpected movements and encounters force us to confront the deep disruptions shaping life on the planet today.
About the Lecturer
Nayanika Mathur is Professor of Anthropology and South Asian Studies at the University of Oxford, where she also directs the South Asian Studies Centre.
This lecture draws on her acclaimed book, Crooked Cats: Beastly Encounters in the Anthropocene (published in India by HarperCollins India), which examines human–animal encounters to understand the entangled ecological and political crises of our time.
PS: Your ticket includes a complimentary beverage or snack at the venue
