AI and art is one of the most contested topics of the moment — lawsuits, strikes, anxiety about livelihoods, and a lot of noise. But the public discussion tends to remain superficial.
Every time a new technology has threatened art — photography, the synthesizer, sampling — people predicted the end, and something unexpected happened instead. We'll look at that history, ask what art is actually for, demystify how generative AI works, and even show how specific technical properties connect in surprising ways to longstanding questions in art and aesthetics. And we'll take on the questions underneath the headlines: labor, the talent pipeline, cultural diversity, and who captures value.
