On a crisp summer day in 1853, a train’s whistle broke the silence of a new dawn. Slowly ‘Sahib’, ‘Sind’ and ‘Sultan’, departed the Bori Bunder station, amongst a roar of celebration and fanfare, whilst pulling a convoy of 14 coaches on a 55 minute long journey to ‘Tannah’ and the Railways were born. The railways were considered the harbingers of economic progress, the finest in terms of class and luxury and the ‘new’ and ‘modern’ way to travel. Along with the railways came the construction of one of the grandest structures in India, a mammoth station building, that is, the finest creation of the architect F.W. Stevens. With its magnificent arches and columns and intricately detailed walls, capitals and pillars, the building has, over time, become a symbol of the city itself. The railways are today a part of the very fabric of this country, with every single inch of India being connected by the rail network. Whether it be to transport freedom fighters across the land or soldiers and vaccines to the far flung parts of India in times of emergencies the Railways have played a pivotal role in the success story of modern India.

Are you a fan of architecture, captivating stories, and the allure of historical anecdotes?

Welcome aboard our ‘Crown Jewel of Mumbai-Inside the CSMT Heritage Building’ walk tour. On this 1.5 hr long tour, take a step into the quiet solitude of the CSMT heritage building, a dramatic contrast from the ever bustling main road just outside. Walk through the passages and corridors of an architectural marvel which until now was a mystery to the commoners of Mumbai. Begin the tour at the heritage museum, overflowing with railway relics from the days gone by. Then walk into the front garden to marvel at the collection of architectural features that dot the building, each one bearing its own significance and story. We then move to the pièce de résistance of the tour, the Staircase and the Grand dome, architecturally speaking the one of the grandest designed structures in India. We finally end the tour in the gallery overlooking the star chamber, more commonly known as the local ticket counter, as we soak in the hustle bustle of the movement on the platforms.
