Tucked into a small lane in Bandra is artist Ratna Gupta's studio. After catching her solo last year at Sakshi Gallery, we wanted to look deeper at a practice that starts from her self and extends outwards. The documentation of her daily routine, the gathering of objects during her walks, and the collection of residue from her home and her studio, all form part of Ratna's process of archiving the present. Utilising found shells, stones and objects, paper, textile and cement, Ratna's work investigates our propensity towards repetitive labour. Together, these allow Ratna to address her preoccupation with the passage of time, the function of memory, and the preservation of detritus.
We'll chat with Ratna about her ongoing projects, how her chronic insomnia has fuelled her practice and what materiality means to her.
