Come join us at Kala Ghoda, as we explore spaces that no longer exist on any city map, but have played a key role in shaping Bombay's art story. And while we can't time travel, we can share images and stories of a nascent Bombay art scene finding its feet post Independence.
Our story beings in the mid-20th century at Rampart Row, with the beginnings of modern art making and display in a newly independent, post-colonial city. Walking along, we “visit” spaces that have disappeared, fallen out of use or bravely strive to stay current: an artists’ centre, restaurants that became creative addas and new galleries for a young country.
We then take cabs over to the Sir JJ School of Art, for a landmark exhibition 'Shifting Visions', that brings together artworks and rare archival objects from the DAG collection and J. J. School archives exploring the early years of the institution, featuring works by some of modern India's most well known names.
