#lectureonrepeat | The Ethics of Love: Desire, Inheritance, and Survival

โ€œLove is not just something we feel. It is something we learn, inherit, and repeatedly rehearse.โ€

Love is often imagined as personal and private. Yet it is shaped by histories of care, labour, and survival that long predate any individual relationship. This lecture offers a reflective introduction to thinking about love as a social, psychological, and ethical structure.

Ritika Singh examines being-in-love as an event that reorganises the self. Drawing from feminist psychoanalysis, existential philosophy, decolonial thought, and her clinical practice, she explores how desire is formed through maternal inheritance and how these inheritances continue to shape intimacy, relational labour, and patterns of attachment in the present.

The session introduces concepts such as epidermalisation, interpretive attunement, and proximal rebellion to help name experiences that often remain felt but unspoken in contemporary relationships. It also asks a central question: what does love do to our being, and why do the spaces meant to sustain it so often fail?

About the Speaker

Ritika Singh is a doctoral candidate at GCAS Dublin and a practising psychotherapist. Her work sits at the intersection of philosophy and psychoanalytic theory, with a focus on maternal affect, caste-inflected domesticity, and the ethics of relational survival. She works clinically with individuals and couples, bringing philosophical inquiry into lived emotional experience.
