For our Third Lecture, we’re bringing you Smrithi Santhoshi Nair, an astrophysicist and curriculum technologist who studies how stars hide their secrets in light. Her work blends solar and stellar physics, large-scale simulations, and real telescope data to decode the invisible stories of the universe. At Lab of Future, she also designs immersive learning experiences—from mini rovers and satellites to spectroscopes and Martian habitats—turning space science into hands-on adventures for learners of all ages
Talk: The Cosmic Peekaboo
The Science of Disappearing Stars and What They’re Hiding
Some stories in the universe are told not in words, but in shadows.
In this session, we follow the rhythm of two stars circling each other—vanishing, dimming, returning—to decode the secrets tucked inside their light. Through TESS and Kepler observations, we’ll trace how every dip in brightness whispers a detail: a star’s size, its heat, its weight, its orbit. With simulations as our guide, we reconstruct these unseen worlds. It’s a quiet, luminous tale about how astronomers learn to read the universe by watching when it chooses to hide.
