Spanning eastern Ladakh and West Tibet and situated at an elevation of 4,225 m. Pangong Tso is 134 km long and divided into five sublakes, called Pangong Tso, Tso Nyak, Rum Tso (twin lakes) and Nyak Tso. During winter the lake freezes completely, despite its saline water.
Pangong Tso got its name from Bangong meaning ‘enchanting’ and true to its name, it changes colours with seasons. The first glance of this alluring lake is enough to leave a lasting impression.
The lake acts as an important breeding ground for a variety of birds including a number of migratory birds. During summer, the Bar-headed goose and Brahmini ducks are commonly seen here. The region around the lake supports a number of species of wildlife including the kiang and the marmot.
