Conceived in 1939 by Portuguese architect José Ângelo Cottinelli Telmo and sculptor Leopoldo de Almeida, The Monument of the Discoveries presents a romanticized view of Portuguese exploration. You’ll find some of the greatest explorers carved onto this monument. It’s situated on the northern banks of the Tagus river and close to the Belem Cultural Centre and Jeronimos Monastery.
