Natural elements have appeared on currency for centuries! Countries often choose to include animals or plants native to them or those important to their culture on their currency.
Join us for a fun and interactive Numismatics show and tell, a slow, object-led exploration of how rivers, mountains, plants, animals and natural materials appear on the notes and coins we handle every day. We look closely at currency as a small archive of place, memory and imagination, tracing the landscapes and symbols embedded in its design. The session flows into a relaxed, simple, hands-on activity where you create a currency of your own, inspired by the natural world.
This show & tell will be facilitated by Sarmaya Arts Foundation in tandem with our new exhibition Odyssey of the Rupee: From India to the World.
Marking 75 years of the Indian Rupee, Odyssey of the Rupee is Sarmaya’s most ambitious exhibition yet. Curated by Dr Shailendra Bhandare of the Ashmolean Museum, University of Oxford, with Sarmaya Arts Foundation, the showcase spans centuries of currency, from ancient punch-marked coins to the first coin minted in Independent India. The exhibition also explores how the rupee travelled beyond borders, featuring beautiful and rare coins and notes from regions like Mozambique, Java, and Saudi Arabia.
There will be a walkthrough of the exhibition at Sarmaya Arts Foundation followed by the show & tell.
