Kanheri was the home of a large Buddhist community for over 2000 years. A monastic complex, it slowly grew, till it was important enough to be reckoned a mahavihara, like Nalanda in Bihar.This guided walk will focus on history of Kanheri Caves, its importance and will show case the complex's iconographically rich site, where you can see religious styles ranging from early Theravada through early and mature Mahayana, and also the beginnings of Vajrayana Buddhism.
The walk is led by Yogini Aatreya, who is an archaeologist and expert in epigraphy.There will be a climbing of stairs to reach different caves. Distance walk- ~1 km
