Sultan Ghari Tomb, the first mausoleum of the Delhi Sultanate. On this historical journey, we will delve into the fascinating story of religious syncretism and the intriguing life of Prince Nasiruddin Mahmud. Date: 5th August 2023 Time: 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM

Details

  • Our journey will begin at the Sultan Ghari Tomb, a majestic mausoleum built in 1231 AD for Prince Nasiruddin Mahmud, the eldest son of Iltutmish and brother of Razia Sultan. The tomb is situated in the enchanting "funerary landscape of Delhi," nestled within the Nangal Dewat Forest, now known as Vasant Kunj.
  • As we explore this architectural marvel, we will learn about the illustrious life of Nasiruddin, who served as the governor of Awadh and Bengal and was the heir-apparent of the Slave Dynasty. Tragically, in 1229, Nasiruddin passed away unexpectedly in Bengal, and his remains were brought to Delhi, where Iltutmish lovingly laid him to rest in this grand mausoleum.
  • Over the centuries, the tomb has evolved into a place of deep devotion and pilgrimage. The local community believes that it now serves as a dargah, holding the remains of their revered Pir Baba.
  • The Mausoleum along with a few structures around from 800 years of history comes out as one of the best kept secret of Delhi.
