The month of Ramzan brings with itself unprecedented festive cheer in Purani Dilli. While the euphoria can be experienced all around, the royal Jama Masjid is undoubtedly the heart of it all. Special Ramzan markets operate in full fervour all around the mosque and people gather in its courtyards before sunset to break their fasts.
These are traditions that have been observed in this Old City since centuries and till date, the community spirit that can be witnessed in Jama Masjid’s courtyard remains unparalleled.
I myself have been going to Jama Masjid for iftars since childhood and this year, I am trying to share this surreal experience with all of you by hosting an iftar gathering in this very courtyard.
What to expect: This will be more of a gathering and not a walk. Ofcourse I’ll be sharing various stories about the culture and my personal experiences. We will make fruit chat and roohafza together and there will be other food items as well which we generally serve during iftars in my family. As the sun sets, we will experience the aura of the evening prayer and eat together, post which we’ll disperse by 7:30pm.
