This brand new walk launches at the Mumbai Walks Fest in December 2025!
Why did Bombay become the home of Indian cricket? Why not Calcutta, Madras, or Delhi? What is it about Bombay’s urban fabric, social history, and cultural diversity that enabled an English game to become distinctly Indian? From the open maidans to the exclusive gymkhanas, we’ll trace how the sport mirrored the city’s divides of class, caste, and community, and how it became a stage for resistance and belonging. Because cricket in Bombay was never just a game. It was a battleground for access, a tool for self-assertion. Come ready to see familiar spaces in a new light and discover how a sport helped build a city.
No prior cricket knowledge required — just curiosity (and comfortable walking shoes)! The walk also includes a short taxi ride between stops.
Tarika Khattar is a historian finishing her PhD at the University of Cambridge, where she also plays for the Cambridge Blues cricket team. A storyteller at heart, she's found her voice through film and academia, with her work appearing on Wisden, Netflix, The Quint, and Global Intellectual History. When not in the archives, she's happiest wandering the streets of Bombay — chasing its stories, its sea breeze, and occasionally, a cricket ball.
