In our upcoming lecture, we are going interstellar with Sharan Banagiri, a Hyderabad native turned global astrophysicist! 🌌 He has hunted black holes from the University of Minnesota to Northwestern (Chicago) and Monash (Melbourne). An expert in gravitational waves, he uses the massive LIGO observatory to "listen" to the universe’s darkest secrets.

Black Holes and Other Time-Sucking Problems: A deep dive into the mystery of blackholes and the latest gravitational waves discoveries. This session is a gentle and accessible survival guide to the cosmos. We will start with a thought experiment: What does it actually feel like to fall into a black hole? (Spoiler: It is a trip to nowhere and no-while).

Sharan will walk us through the modern understanding of gravity—moving past the sci-fi tropes to the actual bending of spacetime. We will explore how scientists detect these invisible giants using Gravitational Waves (ripples in the fabric of space) and what they tell us about the dramatic life and death of stars.

Whether you are a Christopher Nolan fan, a physics nerd, or just casually curious about the dark void, this talk breaks down the universe’s biggest mystery into a story we can all understand.

About the Lecturer: Sharan Banagiri is a Hyderabad-based astrophysicist with a global footprint. He holds a PhD from the University of Minnesota and has served as a research fellow at Northwestern University and Monash University. He is an expert in detecting colliding black holes using the LIGO observatory.
