The origins of Chettinad trace back to the 13th century when the Nattukottai Chettiars migrated from Burma, Ceylon, Vietnam, and Malaysia to Karaikudi after a massive flood in Cauvery Poompattinam. This migration led to the formation of the Chettinad region, which comprised 96 villages by 1947, covering an area of 600-1500 square miles. Today, around 76 villages remain, and the region is nominated for UNESCO recognition due to its palatial houses of historic and cultural value.
