Chettinad, located in the Sivaganga district, is a region historically ruled by the Ramnad kingdom of Pandya Nadu. The origins of Chettinad trace back to the 13th century when the Nattukottai Chettiars migrated from Burma, Ceylon, Vietnam, and Malaysia to Karaikudi after a massive flood in Cauvery Poompattinam. This migration led to the formation of the Chettinad region, which comprised 96 villages by 1947, covering an area of 600-1500 square miles. Today, around 76 villages remain, and the region is nominated for UNESCO recognition due to its palatial houses of historic and cultural value. The Nattukottai Chettiars, also known as Nagarathar or "urban dwellers," have a rich cultural and historical heritage, renowned for their unique cuisine, agriculture, and architecture.

Explore the quaint villages adorned with majestic 18th and 19th-century Chettinad mansions. Join a guided tour to uncover the region's unique cuisine and traditions with Mr. Ve. Vairavan. Indulge in authentic Chettinad cuisine, served in various settings, from interactive kitchen sessions to formal dining experiences. Visit iconic landmarks like the Athangudi Mansion and witness the vibrant craft of Athangudi tile making. Immerse yourself in the spiritual ambiance of Chettinad temples and discover hidden treasures at the Karaikudi Antique Market. Adorn yourself in elegant Chettinad cotton sarees and explore the vintage and cultural museums.
